Sustainable Resource Processing
Executive Summary - Rising to the Challenge
Performance Improvement:
•The sustainability framework and case studies presented here focus on the contribution of technology and innovation to improve business performance
•Company specific improvement and innovation programs need to be based on a clear vision, appropriate stretch targets and allocation of adequate resources; commitment from senior management is critical
•A rigorous analysis of inputs and outputs underpins any sustainable development improvement exercise, whether it be at the enterprise, company, industry or national level
•The aim is to have many companies engaged in practical improvement exercises, who can share ‘new best practices’ and find economically attractive paths to achieve significant energy and water efficiencies, waste elimination and closed loop management of hazardous materials
Regional Synergies:
•Australia has a number of resource processing intense areas, such as Townsville, Gladstone, the Hunter, Kwinana and others; a concerted effort in these areas would have a significant cumulative impact on the nation’s industrial wastes and emissions
•Funding from industry and government sources should be allocated to set up development officers, who can focus on activities that unlock the potential value in regional synergy initiatives
•Networking and branding will enhance best practice sharing and publicise positive achievements in and between the regions
•The aim is to also identify one major ‘showcase’ project in each region over the coming months
